THE SACRAMENT OF WATER BAPTISM

WHAT DOES BAPTISM MEAN OR REPRESENT?
Baptism speaks of new birth:
Baptism is a witness that a totally new life has begun in you. (John 3:5)

Baptism speaks of washing:
Baptism is a witness that the sin which estranged you from God was washed away when Jesus Christ dealt with sin once and for all on the cross. (1 Corinthians 6:11)

Baptism speaks of justification:
Baptism is a witness that the old you has died, drowned in the waters of baptism. The condemning of all failings has been erased forever in God's eyes by the blood of Jesus Christ. (Romans 6:3)

Baptism is putting on a new suit of clothes:
Baptism is a witness to the process of your salvation:  It is as if you have taken off your old, filthy, tattered clothes, gotten a thorough bath, and then put on a marvelous, new, beautiful suit of clothes. Jesus is that new suit, and with baptism we put it on. (Galatians 3:27)

Baptism means death to the person I once was, self-centered, unforgiven, alienated from the life of God. Baptism is a witness that I have been resurrected to new life. It is my adoption certificate into the family of God. (Romans 6:3-10)

WHY SHOULD A CHRISTIAN BE BAPTIZED?
Baptism is a command of Christ:
He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. We need to be baptized as a matter of sheer obedience, if we claim Jesus is in any sense our Lord! (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15)

Baptism is the mark of Christian community:
Baptism is and always has been universally practiced among Christians. Conversion to Christ has brought you into the community of Christ, the church. Baptism is your badge of belonging. (Acts 2:38, 41, 17)

WHO NEEDS TO BE BAPTIZED?
If you have confessed you are a sinner, and repented (made a decision to turn away from a sinful life-style) and put your faith in the power of Christ to save you, then you should be baptized.

DO I NEED TO BE RE-BAPTIZED?
There are various reasons some people feel they need to be re-baptized. For some, they feel they did not have enough faith. For others, they didn't feel they had enough confession. For others, they seek re-baptism because there was not enough water. Baptism rarely needs to be repeated. If you need to be re-affirmed about your previous baptism, please call the senior pastor's office to discuss re-baptism.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..."  Matthew 28:19
